Fountain Pen Friendly Ring Binder Refills? Testing MeePlus Thick and Lightweight Pages!

MeePlus currently offers two types of refill pages: the Thick series (120g) and the Lightweight series (50g), catering to a wide range of consumer needs.

When selecting the right refill pages, consider the following dimensions: page size, design, paper thickness, and various paper properties.

Can MeePlus Refills Handle Fountain Pens? Let’s Find Out!

1. Paper Thickness:

Generally, thicker paper is less prone to wrinkling, feels more substantial, and has better bleed and seep resistance. However, overly thick paper can affect portability, as fewer pages can fit into the same ring size. For example, the Lightweight series with an 11mm ring can hold approximately 140 sheets, while the Thick series may only accommodate 60 sheets.

2. Smoothness:

The paper surface should be smooth to ensure a seamless glide for fountain pens, minimizing scratchiness.

    3. Bleed Resistance:

The paper should effectively prevent ink diffusion, keeping writing clear and avoiding smudging or blurring.

Our lightweight paper is made using a process similar to Tomoe River, providing ultra-thin, durable, and smooth qualities. A small amount of resin is added during production to strengthen the fibers, making the paper sturdy despite its thinness. After drying, a thin coating is applied, creating a smooth surface that prevents ink from soaking through, making it ideal for fountain pen use.

We conducted tests using fountain pens, ballpoint pens, brush pens, highlighters, and stamps, and found that neither type of paper showed any smudging, regardless of the pen used.

      4. Seep Resistance:

High-quality paper typically performs well in terms of ink seepage, preventing ink from bleeding through and keeping your writing neat.

It's evident that the MeePlus Thick Series pages, due to their thicker paper, show almost no ghosting of text on the reverse side. In contrast, the Lightweight Series does allow some visibility of the writing on the back.

If you're planning to retain certain content for a long time and frequently refer back to it, I would recommend using the Thick Series for writing. However, if the content is something you'll write and either discard or store away without much revisiting, the Lightweight Series should work just fine.

        5. Drying Time:

Quick-drying paper reduces the risk of smudging and blurring, resulting in cleaner writing.

We also conducted a smudge test by writing "smudge test" with a fountain pen and then quickly rubbing over the text with our hand after 5 seconds. The results showed that the MeePlus Thick series had minimal smudging, while the Lightweight series displayed noticeable smudge marks. This indicates that the Thick series dries faster than the Lightweight series, making the writing less prone to smudging.

          Summary:

Both series of MeePlus refill pages are fountain pen friendly.

          • Thick Series offers better durability, minimal ghosting, and faster drying time—ideal for long-term notes and frequent reference.
          • Lightweight Series, though thinner and slightly more transparent, is fountain pen friendly and allows more pages per binder—perfect for everyday, high-volume writing.
